Coordinator of African Arts Creative Research
This is currently a part-time, non-salaried appointment (at the time of this appointment but subject to change) with the Africa Centre for Intangible Phenomena Studies (ACIPS) that offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the preservation and advancement of African indigenous knowledge systems within the vibrant fields of visual and craft arts. The role is deeply rooted in scholarly contribution, heritage activism, and intellectual solidarity across the African continent. This position allows for flexible time management while adhering to ACIPS's research ethics, policies, and strategic direction.
I. Core Responsibilities

This involves leading and overseeing all aspects of ACIPS's research initiatives focused on African visual and creative arts. This includes developing research proposals, securing funding (where applicable), managing research budgets, mentoring junior researchers, and ensuring the ethical conduct of all research activities. Specific areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, traditional textile arts, sculpture, pottery, painting, beadwork, and performance arts. The coordinator will be responsible for identifying emerging trends and research gaps within the field.
- Program Design and Facilitation: The role encompasses designing and facilitating impactful artistic research programs and exhibitions. This includes developing program concepts, securing venues, managing logistics, coordinating with participating artists and communities, and overseeing the marketing and promotion of events. The coordinator will work closely with local communities to ensure that research and exhibitions are culturally sensitive and respectful.
- Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange: A crucial aspect of this position involves fostering strong collaborations with scholars, artists, and knowledge keepers across Africa. The coordinator will play a vital role in identifying, documenting, and interpreting traditional and contemporary African art forms. This includes conducting interviews, collecting oral histories, and analysing artistic practices within their cultural contexts. The coordinator will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
- Dissemination and Publication: The successful candidate will contribute significantly to ACIPS's publications, events, and educational programs. This involves writing research reports, articles, and exhibition catalogues; presenting research findings at conferences and workshops; and contributing to educational materials designed for diverse audiences. The coordinator will ensure that research findings are disseminated widely and effectively.
- Strategic Advice: The coordinator will provide expert advice to the executive committee on matters related to African visual and crafts-based artistic expressions. This includes offering strategic guidance on research priorities, program development, and policy matters. The coordinator will actively participate in strategic planning sessions and contribute to the overall direction of ACIPS's work.
II. Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Creative Arts, Art History, Creative Performance, Ethnomusicology, Anthropology, or a related field. A minimum of a diploma in the related field is required (subject to upgrade).
- Proven record of experience in African visual and craft arts research.
- Skills in program design, communication, writing, and collaboration.
- Fluency in at least one African language is desirable.
- Ethical research practice and experience in African community contexts.
- Grant writing and fundraising abilities are a plus.
III. Working Conditions
- Working Hours: Flexible 15-20 hours/week, may vary based on project needs.
- Remuneration: Non-salaried; reimbursed for approved travel, materials, etc.
- Leave: 10 days PTO per year (pro-rata); additional leave subject to approval.
- Conflict Resolution: Issues will follow a collaborative process or mediation.
- Termination: Requires four weeks' notice from either party unless for misconduct.
IV. Additional Considerations
- High degree of self-motivation and time management required.
- Must communicate regularly with the Executive Director.
- Adherence to ACIPS research ethics is mandatory.
- Travel within Africa may be required and reimbursed.
- Regular progress reporting is expected.
