I greet you not merely with words, but with breath—ancestral breath. The breath that stirred the reeds of the Nile, that whispered through the baobab trees, that danced in the fire circles of our forebears.
I greet you in the name of the sacred rivers—uThukela, Nile, Congo—whose waters remember what we forget.
I greet you in the name of the mountain spirits—uKhahlamba, Kilimanjaro, Aburi—who stand as silent witnesses to our becoming.
And I greet you in the name of ACIPS—the Afrika Centre for Intangible Phenomena Studies—whose vision is not merely academic, but ancestral, ceremonial, and revolutionary.
We gather here not to conclude, but to consecrate.
To seal this sacred dialogue with intention, with invocation, and with intergenerational fire.
As our cardinal goal is to arrive at some framework to enhance the decolonisation process, we may borrow from Prof. Es’ Kia Mphahlele, who wrote, “Find ways of decolonizing the mind… Decolonizdecolonisingation should be a therapy”. This wasn’t just political rhetoric; it was a call to heal the psychic exile caused by colonial education systems that alienated Afrikans from our own cultures, languages, and cosmologies. In this spirit, our collaboration with CELT-DUT emerges from a profound and urgent necessity experienced by a segment of students and staff. They are on a quest to discover purpose and significance in an environment that has long rendered their experiences and identities invisible, leaving them to grapple with feelings of exclusion and neglect. Once this task aligns with our vision, we are ready to collaborate with this esteemed institution in pursuing the journey of Sankofa.
Vision Statement: ACIPS as Ceremonial Hearth
ACIPS was not born in a boardroom.
It was born in the dreaming of elders.
In the quiet resolve of those who refused to let Afrikan knowledge be archived without breath.
We are not just a centre. We are a ceremonial hearth—a place where knowledge is not extracted, but invoked.
Where research is not detached, but relational.
Where the intangible—dreams, callings, rituals, names—is treated not as superstition, but as sacred data.
Our vision is to liberate Afrikan epistemologies, not as relics of the past, but as living technologies—technologies of healing, governance, innovation, and spiritual continuity.
We do not merely study phenomena. We summon them.
We do not merely document culture. We dance it, chant it, translate it, and transmit it.
Pending Conference April 2026 Theme Reflections
Next year’s 2026 Conference theme — Afrikan Spirituality: The Past, Present, and the Future in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Epoch — is not a slogan.
It is a summons. A drumbeat. A call to rise — A call for practical commitments to reshape curricula and research that honour Afrikan rituals and values, ensuring that future generations carry forward their rich heritage. Ultimately, this theme champions the idea that Afrikan spirituality can coexist with contemporary technology, positioning it as essential to the future.
The Past
We remember the cosmologies of our forebears.
The drum codes, the rain rituals, the ancestral calendars.
These were not primitive—they were precise, mathematical, metaphysical.
Our ancestors charted the passage of time by the rhythmic dance of moon cycles, weaving together the fabric of their lives with the luminous glow of the night sky. They healed deep-seated wounds and traumas with the soothing power of song, their melodies resonating with the essence of the soul. In their governance, they connected with the spirit world, drawing wisdom and guidance from forces beyond the visible, creating a harmonious balance between the earthly and the ethereal. Their knowledge was encoded in proverbs, in praise poetry, in the silence between chants.
The Present
We find ourselves at a pivotal crossroads, a moment of profound reflection and transformation. Our institutions are stirring from their slumber, slowly awakening to the rich tapestry of our heritage. Our youth, vibrant and visionary, dream in the melodic rhythms of isiZulu, weave intricate lines of code in the expressive nuances of isiXhosa, and embrace the art of healing in the soulful tongues of Sesotho. We are not merely reclaiming what was lost; we are infusing the divine into everyday, merging the sacred with the secular in a harmonious dance. We are embarking on a purposeful journey to re-indigenise our education system not as a fleeting trend, but as a fundamental truth that resonates deeply within our collective consciousness.
The Future
The Fourth Industrial Revolution should not emerge as a new form of colonisation but rather serve as a vibrant canvas upon which we can paint our future.
We must etch our sacred geometries into the very fabric of AI, weaving our cultural narratives into the immutable threads of blockchain. Our ancient rituals should find expression in the dance of robotics, merging the spiritual with the mechanical. Afrikan spirituality is far from incompatible with technology; in fact, it is the original blueprint of innovation. It pulses through our veins as the software of the soul, guiding us towards a harmonious existence. It is the algorithm crafted by our ancestors, a profound code that captures the essence of our being. It embodies the biometric of belonging, connecting us to our roots and to each other in a shared tapestry of life.

Kama lengo letu kuu ni kufikia mfumo wa kuimarisha mchakato wa kuondoa urithi wa ukoloni (decolonisation), tunaweza kukopa kutoka kwa Prof. Es’ Kia Mphahlele, aliyeandika, “Tafuta njia za kuondoa ukoloni kwenye akili... Kuondolewa kwa urithi wa ukoloni kunapaswa kuwa tiba”. Hii haikuwa tu kauli za kisiasa; ilikuwa wito wa kuponya uhamaji wa nafsi ulioanzishwa na mifumo ya elimu ya kikoloni iliyowatenga Waafrika kutoka kwa tamaduni zetu, lugha zetu, na cosmologies zetu. Kwa roho hii, ushirikiano wetu na CELT-DUT unatokana na haja kubwa na ya dharura iliyosawanyika kwa sehemu ya wanafunzi na wafanyakazi. Wamo katika safari ya kutafuta kusudi na umuhimu katika mazingira ambayo kwa muda mrefu yamefanya uzoefu wao na utambulisho wao kuwa visivyoonekana, wakiacha wakikabiliana na hisia za kuachwa na kupuuzwa. Mara tu kazi hii itakapolingana na maono yetu, tuko tayari kushirikiana na taasisi hii yenye heshima katika kufuatilia safari ya Sankofa. Tamko la Maono: ACIPS kama Moto wa Kiseremoni (Vision Statement: ACIPS as Ceremonial Hearth) ACIPS haikuumbwa chumba cha bodi. Ilikuwa katika ndoto za wazee. Katika uamivu wa kimya wa wale waliokataa kuacha maarifa ya Afrika yawe yaliyohifadhiwa bila pumzi. Sisi si kituo tu. Sisi ni moto wa kiseremoni—mahali ambapo maarifa hayachukuliwi tu, bali huombwa. Ambapo utafiti haukatwi, bali ni wa mahusiano. Ambapo yasiyoonekana—ndoto, miito, taratibu, majina—yanachukuliwa si kama imani za upumbavu, bali kama data takatifu. Maono yetu ni kuwatwisha maarifa ya Kiafrika huru, si kama mabaki ya zamani, bali kama teknolojia zinazoishi—teknolojia za uponyaji, utawala, ubunifu, na kuendeleza kiroho. Hatujifunzi tu matukio. Tunawaita. Hatuandiki tu tamaduni. Tunacheza, tunaimbwa, tunatafsiri, na kuzipeleka. Mada ya Mkutano Uliopo Aprili 2026 (Pending Conference April 2026 Theme Reflections) Mada ya Mkutano wa mwaka ujao 2026 — Afrikan Spirituality: The Past, Present, and the Future in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Epoch — sio kaulimbiu. Ni mwito. Kupigwa kwa ngoma. Mwito wa kuinuka — Mwito wa ahadi za vitendo za kubadilisha mtaala na utafiti unaoheshimu sherehe na maadili ya Kiafrika, kuhakikisha kwamba vizazi vijavyo vitaendeleza urithi wao wa thamani. Mwisho wa siku, mada hii inaunga mkono wazo kwamba roho ya Kiafrika inaweza kuishi pamoja na teknolojia ya kisasa, ikitambulika kama muhimu kwa siku za usoni. Zamani (The Past) Tunakumbuka cosmologies dza wawezekaji wetu. Kanuni za ngoma, taratibu za mvua, kalenda za mababu. Hizi hazikuwa za kizamani—zilikuwa sahihi, za kihisabi, za kiroho. Babu zetu walipanga kusafiri kwa wakati kwa kucheza kwa mizunguko ya mwezi, wakiunganisha muundo wa maisha yao na mwanga wa usiku. Waliponya majeraha ya ndani na mateso kwa nguvu za wimbo, melodi zao zikirusha nafsi. Katika utawala wao, waliungana na ulimwengu wa roho, wakichota hekima na mwongozo kutoka kwa nguvu za juu zisizoonekana, wakitengeneza mwiano kati ya ulimwengu wa matukio na ule wa kiroho. Maarifa yao yaliandikwa mivateka, katika nyimbo za sifa, katika ukimya kati ya nyimbo. Sasa (The Present) Tunajikuta katika msongamano wa mabadiliko, wakati wa tafakari na mabadiliko makubwa. Taasisi zetu zinaamka kutoka usingizini, polepole zikifumbua kitambaa cha urithi wetu. Vijana wetu, wenye uroho na maono, wanaota kwa midundo ya kiswahili/isiZulu, wanaandika mistari ya msimbo kwa nuances za isiXhosa, na wanakumbatia sanaa ya uponyaji kwa mitungu ya Sesotho. Hatufanyi tu kuirejesha yale yaliopotea; tunachanganya kitakatifu katika kila siku, tukichanganya kile kilicho takatifu na kile cha kawaida kwa uundaji wa muziki mzuri. Tunaanza safari ya kusitawi kwa mfumo wetu wa elimu si kama mtindo, bali kama ukweli mkuu unaogusa nafsi zetu. Jana na Kesho (The Future) Revolution ya Nne ya Viwanda haipaswi kuja kama aina mpya ya ukoloni bali iwe pano kama jukwaa lenye rangi ambapo tunaweza kuchora maisha yetu yajayo. Lazima tunaweke geometri zetu takatifu ndani ya nguo ya AI, tukiunganisha simulizi za kitamaduni kwenye nyuzi zisizobadilika za blockchain. Taratibu zetu za kale zinapaswa kuonekana katika dansi ya roboti, zikichanganya kiroho na kiufundi. Roho ya Kiafrika haiwezi kutengwa na teknolojia; badala yake, ni ramani ya mwanzo wa uvumbuzi. Inapiga katika mishipa yetu kama programu ya nafsi, ikituongoza kwenye umoja wa maisha. Ni algorithimu iliyoundwa na wazee wetu, msimbo wa kina unaoshikilia kiini cha utu wetu. Inasimamia biometric ya kuungana, ikituunganisha kwenye mizizi yetu na kwa kila mmoja katika muunganiko wa maisha. Wito wa Kutenda: Ahadi za Kiseremoni (Call to Action: Ceremonial Commitments) Tusiachie warsha hii yenye maelezo na rekodi tu. Tuitee na ahadi za kuendelea na mradi huu: Kuunda mtaala unaoitwa kuleta roho, si nadharia tu. Kuunda mifumo ya utafiti inayoheshimu taratibu, si viashirio tu. Kuunda taasisi zinazokumbuka, si tu kurekebisha. Kuwa wasimamizi kwa uwajibikaji wa mababu, si ujuzi wa kitaaluma tu. Kufadhili maadili ya kiseremoni, si muafaka wa kimkakati tu. Tuwaarchitects wa kiseremoni wa siku za usoni. Tuengineers wa mababu wa sasa. Tuwe wataalamu wa kiroho wa zamani. Mawazo haya yaendelee mimbilini mwa wasichana wetu, ndoto za wavulana wetu, na mikakati ya taasisi zetu. Moto usife milele. Ngoma isiwe kimya.
